What is root canal treatment?

It is a procedure which involves removal of infected pulpal tissue situated inside the root portion of a tooth. After numbing the concerned area with local anaesthetic your dentist will remove the infected pulp, then the chamber is thoroughly cleaned and shaped. Unlike Dental implants a root canal treated tooth must be cared for in the same way as a normal tooth. Even though the root canal treated tooth will not be sensitive or painful due to cavities or trauma as the nerve in the tooth has been removed, it is still susceptible to cavities as the calcium in the tooth is attacked by the bacteria in the mouth. Hence, it is still extremely important to preserve and maintain a root canal treated tooth with the help of artificial dental crowns.

At times, heavy forces exerted while biting or due to dental caries, the root canal treated tooth might fracture. In such situations, the remaining part of the tooth will be assessed clinically and with X-rays. If it is possible to save the tooth, a post and core buildup will be needed to replace the missing tooth structure and then place a crown to protect the tooth. If it is not possible to save the tooth, then it needs removal and an implant, bridge or denture may be used to replace the missing tooth.

The answer is yes. Normally a tooth has rich supply of blood vessels and nerves within each pulp chamber through which it gets nutrition to stay strong. Once root canal treated, the teeth gets cut off from nutrition and basically becomes non vital thereby loosing its strength and becoming brittle. The dental crown protects the tooth from fracture. Also prevents contamination of filling material and chances of reinfection by providing a perfect seal.

Despite the nerves being infected the tooth in question can still be used for biting purpose if the infection is completely removed and protected with an artificial crown.
